Model-free identification of brain activity in functional MRI

Recognizing and analyzing patterns in data sets is a challenge with demanding applications in fields as varied as biomedicine, telecommunication or financial markets. In this contribution, a factorization model to decompose multivariate data sets is reviewed, both in theory and applications. Depending on the conditions constraining the factors, different models are obtained. The interplay of novel modelling results and corresponding algorithms with applications is illustrated using fMRI-based human brain recordings.
